Small Maria doll
Developed by the Mazahua community in Querétaro, Mexico
Length: 15 cm
Width: 6 cm
These rag dolls, known as María, originate from the state of Michoacán and Estado de México and were developed by the Mazahua community as a more economical and traditional alternative to the toys sold in the markets, mainly the porcelain dolls imported from Spain.
Over time, these dolls began to represent the Mazahua women who used to walk the streets of Mexico City and were called "Marías". It is even said that this is the reason why the dolls, with colored ribbons and typical costumes of the region, earned the name "María dolls".
