LOCATION:

San Antonino Castillo Velasco is a city and municipality located south of the city of Oaxaca, in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It is part of the Ocotlán neighborhood, south of the Central Valles region.

CHARACTERISTICS:

Although the region is also home to the Zapotec community, this community is located in the Central Valleys region and has different characteristics from the one on the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
San Antonino, Castillo de Velasco is distinguished by the embroidery of the so-called “immortal flower” because it does not lose its color when it dies. In addition, it is also used to make decorations and basketry products.
The dresses are embroidered with wax threads and contain the image of the “pansy” flowers that abound in the region. Because of the complexity of the making, they are very expensive and coveted. They are often called “Oaxaca wedding dresses” and are characterized by their complex designs with animas and flowers. The style of embroidery is called “make me if you can”. Both names refer to the difficulty of the embroidery because of the large number of very small elements that compose it. Most embroiderers learn the craft from their mothers and grandmothers, and practice on larger items such as dresses that take months of work to complete (up to 1 year).

TRADITIONS:

In San Antonino, several festivals are celebrated, most of them to thank their saints. One of the most important festivals of the community is:
The “Night of the Radishes” At this event, radishes are carved and often decorated with immortal flowers and other objects.

On “Palm Sunday” on this day, the inhabitants of San Antonino Castillo de Velasco, from early morning, bring the best of their products as an offering to the image of San Salvador, forming an immense artisanal monument that the parishioners and visitors of the place admire for its extraordinary beauty.
